South Asian kids live in constant survival mode. Don't feel bad, it's okay to put yourself first.

Your mother is upset that you’re leaving and she will have to pick up where you used to to hold. A lot of parents are like this. They won’t realize how much you carried the family dynamics until u leave

I completely hear you— brown moms have sm trauma and they take it out on their eldest daughter (me). I think brown moms weren’t directly told that they were appreciated throughout them growing up and she’s taking that resentment out on you. Don’t feel ashamed to move out, staying home to get a head start financially is so reasonable!

Don’t fall into the guilt. As a brown girl, I am eternally grateful that I moved out and found who I truly was without having to rely on anyone. They will always be Indian parents and at the end of the day we got to break the cycle!!!!

As a mom when I hear this I think first that your mom is being selfish. And I also think as a mom how proud of you I am for saving all that money! You are preparing yourself for what’s next as you should! It is kind to consider your mothers feeling yet at the same time this life is about you and her job is to support you in becoming sovereign 🙏

It’s hard but sometimes living out of the house will strengthen the relationship between you and your parents :) your home holds all those feeling and emotions you went through growing up there and that doesn’t mean theyre bad people! I call it first gen guilt haha

I’m sorry but that is not normal. As an Indian or non Indian, you’re parents should be supporting your decision to find the best financial path for yourself. Being home, for whatever reason, should be accepted by your parents. I’m sorry that this is what u have to deal with ://

Living with your parents is financially comfortable but growth doesn’t happen in your comfort zone! I see my peers that lived with their parents long into adulthood struggle with their confidence and identity. You’re valid for wanting to be move out and live as a “real” adult❤

My parents were LIVID when they found out I bought a house while living with them as a single mother. I contributed to keeping up THEIR home for years. They still didn’t think it was enough or that I deserved my own life.

what i realized early on much earlier than other Indian kids is that you HAVE to start disappointing your parents as early as possible. you should not feel bad.

get a job, stay at home and save as much as you can. Humble yourself when it comes to her. You seem sweet and your safety is most.important...i say this because there are a lot of people out there who will want to use you. When they see you standing on your own for a while then they will believe that you can take care of yourself.

I can feel the conflict as my daughter, who is your age, experiences the same emotions after college and while working and staying with us. The problem is she wants to stay with us, but at the same time, she expects to have the same freedom as if she were living alone, without contributing to household chores or covering any expenses.

Do NOT feel bad. You do not owe your parents anything for giving you life! As an eldest daughter myself, I had to come to terms that certain behaviors were toxic and manipulative. You are your biggest advocate! I lasted two years after college and living alone after that was the best decision I made

This economy is going to make you appreciate your mom after you go out. You probably think there is so much out there for you to enjoy but it’s all fun until you have to live in it alone and care for yourself.

I totally understand the feeling of guilt for not “loving your family more” but it’s also a product of years of how you were treated:( but that feeling of guilt SUCKSSS

Sorry to burst your bubble, but you are not a child anymore and you have to start setting boundaries. This does take time but you have to speak up for yourself, set boundaries and that is a continuous battle. You have to explain to them why you feel the way you feel. You owe that to yourself, once the boundaries are set (assuming parents will accept that with time) you can still enjoy time with family while saving money. You can tell them that you want a healthy future with parents and you want to reconnect as an adult and the upside of that is you also get to save money.
