Last week we received news that broke our hearts 💔 Truffles has always struggled with arthritis and mobility issues; his breed was engineered specifically to get as big as they can, as quick as they can. Other than during winter, we have managed it incredibly well. Truffles is over 7 years old, 6 years older than he would have seen had he not been rescued but still not even half the possible lifespan of a pig. The last few months though, we noticed a change… Truff’s had begun to struggle more, in weather that was never previously a problem. His back legs had even collapsed on him a few times. Last month he didn’t even have the strength to pull himself up with my assistance 😭 We sedated him and scanned him. Half hoping to find something we had missed, something we could cure easily. The likelihood though was that we would find arthritic change taking hold. None in the hooves. None in the hocks. Until there it was. The truth right there for us to see. His spine had begun to fuse together 😩 Whilst this doesn’t mean his journey ends with us right away, it means that his condition is now only manageable; never curable. We’ve now tailored his meds in the hope it will be months & years not days & weeks. The images I’ve used at the start of this clip are the worst we see of him - usually two or three times a week. As the months pass by though, we expect to see this more and more. Truffles was my very first rescue. He taught me that farm animals can have just as much, if not more personality than your typical domesticated animal. He’s chatty and loving. Cuddly and cheeky. He’s the most amazing pig I’ve ever had the chance of being in the company of and I’ll saviour every single second we have left with him ❤️
