hama's only crime was taking revenge on innocent civilians. she can not be blamed for discovering blood bending.

I remember reading a Tumblr post back in the day that said while the show is phenomenal, this particular episode is the biggest tell that it was created by white people. From a white perspective, it's easy to frame blood-bending as an inherently bad thing to do, bc white people always had the privilege of inventing rigid lines for where morals should and shouldn't apply. Had this episode been written by people of color, specifically indigenous people, Hama would've been celebrated for her strength and creativity in such harsh conditions, and she wouldn't have been demonized by the narrative by *also* making her someone who targets people framed as innocent. She'd be treated as a wise elder, not a ghost story. One of my favorite things about Katara is that while she cries over resorting to blood-bending in this episode, she does it freely later in her field trip with Zuko when they're looking for the man who killed her mother. And in that moment it wasn't even for survival, she *wanted* to hurt and control that man. Bonus points that Zuko is surprised she's willing to cross that line, but is totally down for it and whatever other lines she wants to cross, and Katara never feels bad for how she behaved in that episode.

I love that Katara could have easily ended azula in a split second with bloodbending...but chose not too...she chose to throw those hands and won

the crazy part is she wasn't evil, she was pushed to the edge and learned to fight back for her own survival, that's not a concept of evil vs good, it's a concept of "I will do whatever it takes to not die" it will forever puzzle me that katara never understood that given the anger she harbors throughout the entire show against the fire nation and the guy that took her mother

It always pisses me off that Hama could have freed all the other waterbenders captured in that ship

Hama was truly the greatest victim of a colonizer’s perspective on morality. This is a perfect song choice paired with masterful editing.

My friend told me this and I haven't been the se since, thr last water bender they where looking for wasn't Katara it was Hama, she escaped and they thought she went home, thats why they "didn't take prisoners" she was deemed to dangerous to be left alive. It was never about Katara it was all about Hama.
