I get so excited when I hear patients say this. It means that you’ve done your homework, you know how much your general health affects your fertility and you’re committed to making changes that can lead to a healthier pregnancy. Start taking a prenatal vitamin 2-3 months before you start trying to conceive and make sure you are getting at least 400 mcg of folic acid to help reduce the risk of neural tube defects in your baby. Exercise 4-5 days a week with a goal of 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity. If you are not someone who is active, start slow and build up. If you’re someone who is already very active, try to incorporate resistance training or weight lifting into your routine and don’t overdo it on the long distance running. Clean up your diet, which means choosing nutritious, organic, whole foods and a diet that is predominantly lean proteins, fruits and vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats. Reduce the amount of processed or inflammatory foods you consume as well. Reduce your exposure to environmental toxins in your home. This means swapping out plastic water bottles and food storage containers for glass or stainless steel, getting rid of fragrances and cleaning solutions or detergents that may contain forever chemicals and not using teflon cookware. Quit smoking and using substances including any m@rijuana or THC/CBD products. They are so harmful to your fertility and are associated with a laundry list of pregnancy complications and risks. Cut back on alcohol and caffeine. Limit yourself to less than 4 alcoholic drinks per week and less than 200 mg of caffeine per day. Get up to date with health screenings, which includes pap smear, mammogram, lipid screening and v@ccin@tions. You don’t have to make a million changes all at once. Instead, focus on making small, little adjustments that you can maintain long term. Making these changes to your lifestyle is not only good for your fertility, but it’s good for your overall health and the health of your future baby. Which one of these changes should I explain in more detail? Let me know in the comments. #fertilitydoctor #fertilitydiet #prenatal #folicacid #ttcjourney #fertilitytips #fertilityjourney #ttc
