The Government needs to make banks serve the people, not control them. “Bank branches keep getting harder to find with the latest figures showing 155 closed this past financial year. Data from the banking watchdog shows 1564 bank branches have shut over the past five years, with the Commonwealth Bank leading the cull in the 12 months to the end of June.” And “Westpac will pay a $20m fine after the Federal Court ruled its rogue home loans arm RAMS engaged in systemic misconduct for years. RAMS had already conceded in court it allowed unlicensed lenders to approve home loans for customers who may have struggled to pay the money back.” And “The government’s long-awaited “cash mandate” legislation has been released, but one advocate warns the proposed rules would “green light the cashless society”. For one, the mandate would exempt all small businesses with turnovers below $10m from having to accept cash. Further, the mandate would only apply to large fuel and grocery retailers.” •••••••••• There’s no better example of big government and big corporations working together than the regulation of banks and how they get away with continually screwing their customers. Whether it be closing down branches or engaging in dodgy lending practices there doesn’t seem to be a crime that doesn’t pay for banks. The Government of course gives the banks a lot slack as they are working hand in hand with banks and other big business to eliminate cash. While I accept credit cards are convenient, it is critical that cash stays in society so the governments can’t start using electronic financial transactions for surveillance and coercion. Any faith I had in governments staying out of people’s lives was completely lost during COVID. The elimination of cash is critical to the introduction of a digital ID.
