Officers are investigating a suspected arson at a block of flats in South Wigston. Police were called by the fire service to Thorpe House in Countesthorpe Road, shortly before 8pm on Friday (31 January). One resident, a man in his 40s, jumped from a second storey window to escape the fire and suffered a broken ankle. No one else was injured. An investigation is currently underway and from enquiries carried out so far it is believed the fire was started deliberately at the bottom of the ground floor stairs. Officers are appealing for anyone who was in the area and may have seen someone acting suspiciously or any information that could assist. Detective Constable Kevin Sharkey said: “It is important that we identify the person responsible for this incident. “The fire was started in the communal area of the flats at the bottom of the stairway. This is the main entrance and exit point for the occupants and it is luckily no one was seriously injured or trapped as a result. “It is also thanks to colleagues in the fire service that the flames were quicky contained and the fire didn’t spread any further and cause damage to people’s homes. “If anyone was in the area of Countesthorpe Road on Friday night and saw anyone acting suspiciously – please come forward with what you know. “We also continue to be in the area carrying house-to-house and CCTV enquiries as part of the investigation.” Anyone with information is asked to report online at www.leics.police.uk or by calling 101 – quoting crime reference number 25*62252. #LeicsPolice #LFRS #southwigston
