nato is not the reason russia invaded, just a post factum invented reason. putin did this for his tsarist ambitions, nothing else, and he has been doing this covertly and overtly since he took power in many countries, not just ukraine. he miscalculated ukraine though, he really thought it would take three days.

Afghanistan managed to ‘win’ against the Soviet Union in the 80s and arguably against the US coalition in 00s. While Ukraine are unlikely to turn the tide of the war they could grind Russia down until they withdraw.
