Your true tribe understands that you were late, because you were chasing ameiva ameivas in the parking lot. When it’s your true tribe, your “weird” isn’t weird at all. I actually got some good pictures of these invasive lizards, but my memory card crashed and I lost them all. At least my iPhone did not fail me for this video. If at first, you don’t succeed, try try again. I will be back for more photos. Stay tuned. These ameiva ameivas are called many names—giant ameiva, jungle runner, Amazon racerunner, green ameiva, South American ground lizard, giant whiptail and dwarf tegu. Native to central and south America, it’s believed these invasive lizards have established in South Florida as a result of the exotic pet trade, escaped and/or released. Although there is sexual dimorphism in this species, visually the difference between males and females isn’t blatantly obvious. Males are slightly larger in size, with larger jowls and display a more vibrant green than females. A little more obvious is the male’s blue belly compared to the female’s white belly, but good luck seeing the underside of these incredibly fast, skittish lizards that spend a lot of time in burrows. At full maturity, ameiva ameivas grow to be about 18-20” in length. These lizards are an invasive species in Florida, but not as harmful as invasive tegus to which ameiva ameivas are related and certainly not as destructive as apex Burmese pythons that are eradicating land mammals. Opportunistic eaters, these whiptails primarily eat insects, but some studies show ameiva ameivas feed on anoles as well. #conservation #lizard #reels #video #invasivespecies
