Reactive dog? Why is a structured group class important? If you’ve ever taken your dog to any sort of class, you’ll notice that they act differently than they do when you’re on your street. For a lot of people that differently is worse. The dog barks a lot in the class (when I hear horror stories of dog owners that were forced to put their dogs behind blockades at a purely positive group class, because the Barking was too obnoxious, and saying no, for some reason, is not an option, I laugh out loud) It makes sense that most dogs would bark and struggle with this because being around seven, 10,(or 35 at a Say It Once Dog Training group class) is not typical. Once you get control in these environments, it’s been common for owners of reactive dogs to ask the question, why is my dog better at a group class than they are on my street. There’s a few reasons, but I want to go over the most important ones. Firstly, the group class is not your territory. Their house, their street, their neighborhood, or at least that’s how they view it. Your dog practices protective behavior at your house frequently, barking at the window, reactivity on your street, it all reinforces this reactivity loop of I bark, and the trigger moves away. My barking works, is how the dogs brain connects this loop. When you’re at a class, and your dog finally has the chance to be around the trigger for more than 10 seconds, and actually process, learn, and create new habits, it all comes down to the fact that the interaction with other dogs was longer. Almost every interaction that your dog has with a trigger at the house or on the walk is less than 10 seconds. 99% of that 10 seconds was met with pure frustration from your dog. At these classes, you get to learn how to handle your dog properly, do you also get to see your dog make decisions, whether they’re good decisions, or bad decisions, and you learn how to react responsibly. Once you have mastered group class, in a perfect world, you would love to set up a training lesson in your neighborhood with dogs. You wanna make it look like real life, and practice multiple repetitions so that your dog can process, learn, and create new habits! #DogTraining #dogtrainingtips #balanceddogtraining #sayitoncedogtraining
