How many people have been bum rushed by an off-leash dog? A few things I want you to consider. You are absolutely allowed to simultaneously show grace to the human and stand up for your dog. What I mean by that as some people do make honest mistakes. Unfortunately, it happens. This is an extremely frustrating mistake. If you have a dog that is fearful, reactive, aggressive, and so on. if I’m walking one of my dogs, or another dog, that is super happy, go lucky, and I can tell the dog approaching is also happy-go-lucky, I give my dog the release command, and I allow them to interact. My dogs are better at greeting and de-escalating that I am. this all changes dramatically, if the oncoming dog is not friendly, or if the dog I’m training is reactive/aggressive/fearful The second that my dog believes that they need to aggress in order to protect themselves, I’ve lost. We won our dogs in this situation to trust that we will take care of the entire situation. At this point, there is nothing that I will not do to protect that. Some dog owners carry mace, a pet corrector air spray, I even have one client that walks two very small dogs with a cattle prod. In this day and age, I do feel like owners need permission to protect themselves and their dogs. I have to be 100% honest, if my dog ran up on your dog, and you kicked him, I would be so disappointed in myself for allowing that situation to happen. with all of that being said, do not forget to show grace to your fellow human being. Mistakes happen all of the time, but if it happens on multiple occasions, it is no longer a mistake and it is stupidity.
How does your dog behave when you invite guest into your house? For many, this is a chaotic experience, but let’s walk through some things that will help! firstly is the energy of the person coming into the house. If they come in hot, with a high-pitched baby voice egging the dog on to get excited, we are screwed. Remember, dogs greet through their nose, so give them the opportunity to do so. Ignore them for a few minutes so they can smell you find out who the guest is, where they’re coming from, and all the information that’s important. Fulfill your dog before the guest come over. Take them for a long walk, a good obedience training session, or a session of their choice. No matter what, don’t keep your dog, locked up inside of your home all day and then question while your dog is acting like a psychopath when you bring your family over. Remember, the leash is not an outside walking tool, it’s a way to communicate with your dog and control them. Use the leash inside your home so that your dog can’t jump on the counter and steal food. Can’t knock over grandma, and to give general guidance on where they should be in what they should be doing. when you need them to settle down, use your crate or place command. I don’t think your dog should be stapled to these commands the entire time a guest is there, but utilizing this when your dog gets over excited or there’s a lot happening, specifically with a frozen treat like @Dogsters will give them a chance to calm down. If you have a dog, that’s nervous with people coming into the house don’t be afraid to put them into the crate first. Allow everybody to enter your home, and then bring your dog out.
