@jeremyandrewdavis: Many people have been surprised at how I’ve been able to win others from sometimes outright antagonistic backgrounds over.
Well, I have a bit of a background in communication, and I've learned it's not about debating—it's about connecting. I don't want to win an argument; I want to win an ally. The video shares a few of the key techniques I use to win people over.
First, a crucial note: The emotional burden of this work—of patiently winning allies—should fall primarily on non-marginalized people. It's intensive emotional labor, and those most targeted by harmful ideologies have already done more than enough. We are FORCED to do this emotional labor. To be an ally is to shoulder this responsibility too.
Your approach also has to be strategic. Some conversations are for intentional, gentle seed-planting, finding common ground to build upon. Others, depending on the context, might call for a more combative stance to shut down harmful rhetoric. Each has its place, and knowing the difference is key.
These methods take practice, but they work. What's one technique you’ve used effectively? Share it with others in the comments so we can all learn!

respectability politics ("when I talk and act like this they will listen") doesn't work longterm. I wrote my thesis about it, expecting it to work but research shows it doesn't (making me sad).

I do this often but the moment they walk away they forget everything we talked about and go back to blaming unhoused people and minorities for their problems.

Please do more of these. I have a touch of the tism and its really hard not to correct them and bring in hard facts. I have learned this never goes well. I just avoid them all together if I can because it disturbs my peace. Can you do more controversial subjects please? I need practice 😅

I do a lot of this and another thing that I find really helpful is I try to make people think through their opinions as much as possible by asking a lot of questions. Both conservatism and liberalism do not encourage free thought, at every step of the way working class people are encouraged to listen to slogans, get angry, and not think too deeply about anything. I identify what people care about and tie it into everything. I recently had a lot of luck with talking about housing with my mom’s husband, I asked him if he thought that everyone should get housing and he said that “only if we start with veterans” and really hammered home how non-partisan this issue is. then later on the night when we talked about trans funding I was like, “that’s not a lot of money and honestly I think politicians are making us fight about this so we don’t work together to help homless vets” Whenever I talk about something historical that happened that they weren’t taught I also like to be like “people with jobs don’t have time to keep up with this stuff! It’s crazy you didn’t learn that but rich pe lobby the government so working people don’t learn stuff” constantly affirming that they work hard and it’s not their fault they’re not up to date.

In my experience it’s also important to be aware of what buzzwords conservative media uses and avoid them like the plague. I walk talking to my FIL one time, and it was a productive conversation focusing on how greedy insurance companies are, how inefficient having a whole second industry related to medical bills is, healthcare being tied to employment being bad (that part was tricky), etc. and was so close to at least planting the seed of universal healthcare being a good idea when I slipped up and used some word he’d heard on talk radio, and then he went off on a 10 minute rant about “illegals stealing all our healthcare.”

Debates don’t help, but human connection does meeting each other as humans and discussing human experiences, it helps bridge that adversarial right versus left mentality and it becomes about us discussing our common human experience.

I had one older guy say the classic "nobody wants to work anymore" when he was complaining about waiting in a store. I asked if he thought someone would accept a million dollars to do the job. He said yeah. So I said "then I guess they just aren't paying enough." He looked like he was having an internal debate after that, so I let be.
