I worked in banking for 11 years. One time, one of the tellers had a really large cash deposit from a festival (over $250k). I had to help him count it. He sold it to the vault and all was said and done. The next day, the vault was audited (like normal) and was short $20k. I helped everyone count their drawers and everyone was ok. fast forward to that evening, he found the $20k in the back of his cubby where they kept overflow cash. It was money he was supposed to sell from a business deposit (not the large deposit) and forgot to put it in the big vault. We both got written up, even tho I had nothing to do with it bx I, "should have known HE HAD IT IN THE CUBBY". I was furious and fought it.

I would have told the boss to send me this in writing and still go to HR. The boss could use this “mistake” against you in the future.
