My husband and I have a rule, we do not lend money to friends and family. The stress and relationship strain is not a risk we are willing to assume. If we can afford to give, we simply will give.

We don’t give money to ppl we don’t want to loose. If you lend money to family/friends - be mentally ready to loose this relationship forever before you lend the money. My immediate family (my mum/dad/kids) has this spoken out rule - we are asked for a loan, then after we loan, we never ask it to be paid back (there is no due date set, nor pay back schedule. Even if they say they’ll pay back by XX date, no expectation). My dad once said “what is mine will eventually be yours - wether I give it to you sooner or later it doesn’t matter. If i give it to you, you pay it back, you’ll get the same money back”. This is when our “rule” started. But I think this works within a healthy family.
