In this clip from our conversation with Nthebe Molope, we unpack the widely accepted—but historically inaccurate—narrative around the figure known as “Shaka Zulu.” Nthebe explains that the name “Shaka” was originally seen as a curse, not a name of honor, and that his real name was uMlilwana, as called by his mother. He was later given the name Ilembe, meaning “the sharpest axe,” in recognition of his leadership and strategy. The surname “Zulu” also raises questions, as it was not commonly used in his lineage—unlike his father Senzangakhona, from whom he should have derived his surname. This conversation challenges the way African history has been packaged and retold through colonial filters, and why reclaiming historical truth matters. Full episode in bio!
