I had severe eczema and crippling allergies as a child, and all my siblings have asthma and Crohn's disease. Our ancestors lived, breathed, and bathed in Bubonic Plague, rubbed it in their gums and snorted it in lines, then topped in off with a Potato Famine for luck.

i watched a documentary ages ago that claimed a mutation that helped some individuals survive the black plague also helped individuals with HIV .... dunno if that's been disproven or if i'm misremembering but it's so interesting how we're able to apply current genetics knowledge to the past

This! I have chronic illness now but as a kid, when my family would be bed ridden with whatever cold or flu had taken them out, I wouldn't even get a runny nose. But the very odd occasion I did get sick, I'd legit be on death's door lol
