Warner Pitcher was murdered on June 28, 1962. That morning, he began his workday at the Self Drive-It Corporation, an affiliate of Avis Rent-A-Car. He called home around 8am to tell his wife that he'd forgotten his lunch, and she offered to bring it to him later. By 10am, he made a routine phone call to the company’s main garage about a repair order. Sometime between that 10am call and approximately 10:20am, intruders entered the rental office. They forced Warner into a garage in the rear of the building. They overpowered him, bound his hands and feet with several strips of wide surgical tape, and gagged him. Both men then bludgeoned Warner repeatedly with a heavy automobile bumper jack. His skull had been shattered by at least a dozen blows. Shortly after 10:45am, a man named Edward Lynch arrived at the agency to rent a car. He first entered the office area and, finding no one there, called out and waited briefly. Receiving no answer, he walked back through the garage area. On the floor he found Warner lying face-down in a pool of blood, his hands bound behind him, and adhesive tape across his mouth. Shaken, Lynch immediately notified police. When police arrived, the blood-covered jack was found lying across Warner's back. There were signs that the office had been robbed. A cash drawer was found open and $99 was missing, yet $165 in other drawers and money in Warner’s wallet had been overlooked. Six company credit cards were later found discarded in the subway concourse across the street, along with brochures and business cards from the agency, suggesting that the killers fled through a pedestrian tunnel to the subway station. Witnesses reported seeing two men running from the area around the time of the attack. One was described as wearing a green uniform with a white patch on the breast; the other wore dark trousers and glasses. Detectives from the homicide unit immediately launched a massive investigation. A special task force of thirty detectives was organized, joined by officers from robbery, burglary, and the Northwest Detective Division. By the end of the first week, over one hundred people had been interrogated and roughly thirty tips a day were being pursued. Authorities believed Warner had interrupted a robbery in progress. The brutality of the attack led police to speculate that the killers might have been mechanics or service-station attendants familiar with the area and possibly known to the victim. They focused especially on garages and parking-lot employees, checking for men who wore uniforms like the one described by witnesses. Detectives lifted fingerprints from the scene and compared them against arrest records but found no match. Officers canvassed the surrounding blocks repeatedly, checked cars, and questioned attendants at the subway entrance. His employer offered a $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. Warner’s wife was left with their two small daughters. Friends and neighbors described the couple as deeply devoted; the night before the murder, Warner had been seen in his backyard tossing his baby in the air and laughing. At one point, a man named Edward Deschenes, a former mental patient from Maine, was detained after showing up at the Pitcher home to offer condolences. He was carrying newspaper clippings about the murder and admitted to hitchhiking to the area several weeks earlier. After questioning, he was charged in connection with an unrelated burglary and cleared of involvement in the killing. Through early July 1962, detectives persisted in checking every routine lead, but each ended without results. By July 8, 1962, the case had reached a standstill. Investigators acknowledged that they had no solid leads and no suspects in custody. The killers have never been identified, and the murder remains unsolved. Warner was 25 years old. #murder #truecrime #truecrimetok #unsolved #unsolvedmurder
