Trawlers are not just mass fishing they are reshaping the ocean Trawlers catch massive amounts of fish but their impact goes far beyond the nets. Studies show that bottom trawling disturbs up to 50 million hectares of seabed globally every year, crushing corals, sponges and habitats that have taken centuries to form. These structures are home to countless species, from small invertebrates to fish, and act as critical nurseries for young marine life. Alaska pollock, cod, shrimp and many other species are caught with trawlers. Even when managed under sustainable quotas, trawling often removes huge amounts of prey from the food web. Predators like whales, seals, seabirds and larger fish suddenly have less to eat, which can ripple across the ecosystem for decades. Research shows that such disruptions can reduce biodiversity, alter population dynamics and even collapse local fisheries if repeated over time. Bottom trawling also damages the seafloor itself. Cold water corals, sponge gardens and sediment layers are physically destroyed. Recent studies reveal that this disturbance releases carbon stored in sediments, contributing to ocean acidification and adding greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. In other words, trawling not only kills marine life but also harms the ocean’s ability to regulate climate. The ocean is essential for humanity. It produces over 50 percent of the oxygen we breathe, regulates climate and supports food security for billions of people. When trawlers devastate habitats and remove key species, we are not just losing fish, we are undermining the systems that make life on Earth possible. This is why awareness matters. Sharing knowledge about the true cost of industrial trawling is a small step toward protecting the ocean that sustains all of us. #savetheworld #savethesea #fyp #ocean #nature
