@kitykat35: People might not realize how Chiari decompression surgery could improve things like hand strength, coordination, or fine motor skills. It sounds unrelated until you understand how the nerves work. Chiari can push downward on the part of the brain and upper spine that control the nerves to the arms and hands. It can also block CSF flow and create syrinxes in the spinal cord — and syrinxes often affect hand function first. When the brainstem or cervical spine is under pressure, the signals to the hands don’t travel correctly. Decompression surgery doesn’t fix the hands directly — it removes the pressure and restores the flow so the nerves can finally do their job again. That can lead to improvement in grip strength, coordination, dropping objects, tremors, and fine motor control. And even if it doesn’t reverse everything, it can at least stop the damage from getting worse. In Carter’s case we are hoping this surgery will give him better hand control and prevent further loss of function. The hands are only as strong as the nerves that control them — and right now those nerves are being compressed. #Chiari #Syrinx #Decompression #MedicalMom #NeuroFacts
