i think at the end magpie laying out like that was covering its eggs.
Bird (mom and dad) was worried that reptile going for their eggs, but he headed to the branches for safety instead.
That's why they stopped attacking and the mother went back to protect the eggs. You can see her covering the nest with some extra branches just before she spreads wings. Not,100% just a guess.
