It was officially organized under tribal leaders, and the Prophet Muhammad draped it with Yemeni cloth after conquering Mecca. The covering was later produced in various places like Egypt before the process was moved to Saudi Arabia in 1927. Evolution of the Ghilaf (Kiswa) Pre-Islamic Era: The practice of covering the Kaaba began before Islam, with tribes covering it in layers of fabric that would be replaced when worn out. Qusayy ibn Kilab: He is credited with unifying the tribes of Mecca and organizing the cooperative effort, known as al-rafada, to cover the Kaaba. King Tubba Abu Karab Asad: According to legend, he was the first person to cover the Kaaba with a striped red garment. Prophet Muhammad: After the conquest of Mecca, he draped the Kaaba with Yemeni cloth. Post-Prophet Muhammad: The tradition continued with various rulers, including the Umayyad and Abbasid caliphates. Ayyubids, Mamluks, and Ottomans: During these eras, the black cloth was made in Egypt and transported to Mecca. The practice of decorative coverings also began during this time. Saudi Era: In 1927, King Abdulaziz Bin Abdulrahman Al Saud ordered the first Saudi-made Kiswa for the Kaaba. Since then, the tradition of making the Kiswa in Saudi Arabia has continued, with the process being modernized over time. The Annual Replacement Timing: The old covering is replaced with a new one every year on the ninth day of Dhu al-Hijjah, during the Hajj pilgrimage. Process: The replacement is done by skilled artisans and technicians. Location: The process of making the Kiswa was moved from Egypt to Saudi Arabia in 1927 and is now done in the King Abdulaziz Complex for the Kaaba Kiswa.
