and I bet slughorn thought of him as his own son and protege, he definitely felt very paternal towards Tom when he realized that he lives in an orphanage- so he treated him with more love and patience, teaching him because of all the potential he saw. he thought Tom was gonna be great and famous, and he was- just for all the wrong reasons 😭
