@nnnhrescue: Sometimes putting myself in harms way, as the trainer of the rescue, when working with wild horses like I do can't be avoided. I avoid it at all costs of course but...whether it be a wild mustang or a wild domestic it does happen. Sianna was shivering this morning as temps have dropped considerably and it's been raining off and on. So I decided today was the day and we would break it up into sessions so as not to stress her. She did amazing at first putting her face in the halter while eating and letting me put it over her ears. But then we spent almost another hour trying to allow me to clip the throat latch. I almost got it once but missed and after that she was having none of it. For her safety I couldn't leave a halter unclipped breakaway halter or not. And it was doubtful even if I did get the halter clipped she would allow a blanket anywhere near her. So I moved the panels to make a much smaller space where she could still move around but I could reach her to get what needed to be done done. She immediately allowed me to clip the halter. Then I was able to adjust it appropriately. We have a brand new blanket on the way but I grabbed one I thought should fit her and climbed up on the panels and slowly lowered it onto her body and surprisingly she did really well. She allowed me to clip the front, adjust the rear end, and reach under her belly to adjust the straps several times in order to get the belly band snugged where it should be. She will officially be warm over the next several days with the rain and cold snap this week and if needed I can always panel her back up to remove it etc. She didn't mind me touching her in any fashion and the swollen spot under her belly is not soft like an abscess would be. And I was able to clean her shoulder up which is healing super nicely and it's fully closed up. In rescue we do what needs to be done for our horses to be 💯 comfortable. Even sometimes at the cost of potentially being injured.
