@hennyondatok: I just found this entire discussion very intriguing and decided to share a take on the whole thing… Jean Beaudrillard really was spittin’ and continues to inspire deep thought with his work in Simulacra & Simulation Tell the Bees video: @Tell The Bees Contra Tenore video: @Contra Tenore
As a genz person I agree with his take, but I think the issue is that a lot of people think gen z is younger than they are, I’m about to be 26, so when people talk about “these kids” it’s makes me think they are confusing us with gen alpha

Thank you for making this! I responded to the OP and he didn’t respond— which, whatever, I was just working on something I thought was interesting. The people who made up the fact that I was a sociologist— which I would never say— were doing their own thing. Posting online means haters so it is what it is but I appreciate you making this!

perhaps i am biased bc i am a tell the bees stan but i dont get why ppl are accusing him of overly moralizing gen z. that vid didnt even seem particularly critical it was literally just saying you haven’t lived an experience that you witnessed online??

I teach semiotics and the second creator’s use of semiotics to try to dismiss Josh was quite nonsensical to me because it missed the point of the first video. It really felt like one of my HS students trying out what they think they know but they don’t quite understand the source text they’re citing or its context.

I’m 28 (so eldest Gen Z) and continually having this same conversation rn re: the Tyler the creator past behavior. People who are clearly younger are arguing me down about how “that’s just how people told jokes *back rhen*” I’m telling ppl I was there in 2011/12/13 and into alt music, attended multiple OF shows and no, it absolutely is not lmaooo the overly confident arguing without having ever experienced it is so baffling to me

The original video is a fair point but the thesis is antithetical to Sim & Sim. His use of the “phases” of simulation to suggest that new authentic things are created and then corrupted is what Baudrillard was critiquing.

Gen z here and I love Josh and what he does. I think gen z is easily triggered by any commentary about gen z, but I also do not think that is unique to any generation of people lol. I work in a customer facing role and manage people of all different ages, a lot of what gets attributed to gen z behavior is really a societal issue affecting all ages. Gen z seems to be struggling to hear perspectives that aren’t completely aligned with theirs, or take the time to look inward. It’s important for us all to inspect every lens someone could be seeing things through and understand society as a whole better. Josh’s content is interesting, eye opening and useful.

while every generation has an incomplete idea of the past based on media from that time they consume, gen Z being raised largely in an algorithmic internet means the information is largely out of context
while it's true that we have tools to research firsthand contemporaneous accounts of people in certain subcultures, the FYP conditions people to default to accepting whatever information they're given as a full truth rather than a default mode to research information in a time linear way pre algo Internet

Is this just the first time gen z are hearing what their criticism as a generation is gonna be? Takes time for the gen to age but here we are

Ageee!! I am a sociology professor. The argument that “legitimate” (whatever that means) sociology only happens within academia is BORING and WRONG. I adore tell the bees.

Tell the Bees has a good analysis, but the comments quickly became about the superiority of millenials over gen Z, which I feel is different than what he was saying, and I see this attitude a lot with the generations discourse

I feel like there is probably a conversation here about anti intellectualism, and how people will see someone giving commentary on a topic and decided that person is “pretending to be an expert” when it’s just an intelligent person speaking on something they find interesting

Pretty ironic considering the symbol that is the video is being used to justify his own false understating of what he thought to be true lolol

I’m absolutely not educated here but curious, if the aesthetic of the 80s was a part of their life, then isn’t that a part of their story and experience? Not the literal 80s, but the aesthetics belong to them too now. I’m not sure if the argument is that they feel they’ve experienced the LITERAL 80s or what though
