I live on the Ohio River and many river towns had mother-of-pearl factories where they would punch holes out of the mussel shells and then there would just be massive piles of mussels shells with holes missing for years after the fact. Such a cool thing to learn about!

I’ve actually bought buttons for sewing with these on the back in the store, because apparently I’m vintage, lol - and I didn’t know that. I just figured it was to hold them on the package without damaging 🫣
