I’m a 55yo marketing professional with my two university student sons (19 & 22) living with me. I’ve been out of work for 17mtjs now. I’ve been trying to find consulting work since Jan (after giving up on the job mkt). It’s crickets out there too. No one is hiring.

sorry to add to the negativity, but job listings don't always mean employment is on the rise. with a lot of skilled workers moving abroad, a lot of local businesses are struggling to hire high skill/experience roles. so it could well be that there are lots of people looking for jobs, and lots of jobs available, but they just don't line up with each other.

It’s so bad 😭 I really feel for those who have been made redundant and are finding it difficult to find a role

It’s so depressing. We don’t want to move to Aussie, but one more redundancy risk period and we’re going to run out of luck

Also the people who are unemployed but in a relationship so don't qualify for wins and therefore are not counted in these figures.

some places put up listings with the fact they've already hired from the inside but they still legally have to list it

The problem people don’t talk enough about is that its not just not finding a role from an employer - it’s about people also not being able to create their own businesses and the barriers to being self employed.

Great post. I am in the underutilized catagory (contract journo) and have had loss of hours so even with good contacts, there is nothing going. However, you're right, there is more job listings of late so hopefully things will change soon.

my sister is currently a freelancer in costume/fashion design. she has had alot of jobs with Weta (including on big movies) in past and is pretty highly recommended with alot of companies/has had alot of repeat clients. this year she took the opportunity to study as a high school teacher because her work has dropped off so much (and thankfully already has a job lined up for next year) its so hard out there!

You want to be in business. We haven't had to restructure hanging in there with our people. We are just going to have to. The boom times where Labour borrowed to have our economy full we are paying price know.

You should show past numbers as well. These numbers are hard to rationalise without comparison to previous times. For all we know 12% underutilization rate is normal and it’s actually the lowest it’s ever been. Interesting stuff though.

It’s because of private equity like most problems atm. They brought up everything and mum & pop shops couldn’t compete with companies who can take a loss for years. Now all the money is going to only a few mega companies who pay poor wages instead of jobs and wages being spread across multiple smaller businesses. And then we have automation and AI ontop. The economy hasn’t changed much so lots of money still it’s just not being spread out but that’s capitalism for yah
