A female lawyer with Down Syndrome: Born on January 30, 1999, Ana Victoria is the daughter of Marisol de Santiago Ochoa and Jesús Espino Zapata. Her inspiring journey is a testament to her resilience and determination, as she overcame the societal prejudices and academic challenges that the people with Down Syndrome and other disabilities face all through her studies. “Teachers play a crucial role in creating a more inclusive educational environment. It recommends that educators be supportive, listen to their students and offer additional support when needed," Espino told the newspaper La Jornada de Zacatecas. To avoid discrimination, Espino completed her high school online, and was admitted to the Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas to study law. There, she encountered an education system unprepared for her specific needs. However, her determination, coupled with the invaluable support of a dedicated shadow professor, helped her navigate the rigorous demands of her legal studies. She credits her "maestra sombra," and aids that accompanies people with disabilities through their education as part of the people that helped her achieve her dream of becoming a lawyer. #Ana Victoria Espino De Santiago became the first lawyer with Down Syndrome. The 25-year-old from Zacatecas, Mexico, graduated from law school, which was not an easy feat as she faced typical societal prejudices and academic challenges toward those with Down Syndrome. She kept going, exercised incredible determination, and demonstrated unmatched resilience to reach this milestone. Through this, she’s setting a big standard, for those with disabilities or otherwise. She plans to use her education to become a legislator and continue to fight against discrimination for those with disabilities. We have to get used to assuming that disabilities don’t define one’s destiny. Assume someone with a disability can accomplish anything they set their mind to—and they probably will.
