Hospitals are penalized for readmissions within 30 days when you’re on Medicare. Hospitals push those patients towards hospice and DNR so the hospital doesn’t loose money. Usually they admit under OBS to avoid the readmission as well. Obs status can cause the patient more money because you’re billed as outpatient instead of inpatient.

I agree wholeheartedly that United needs to go, but it’s important to note that we can’t make a patient DNR unilaterally. Either the patient or their family (if patient is incapacitated) has so sign a legal document. So, if you or a loved one have been designated DNR without consent, that’s illegal and needs to be reported to the licensing boards.

As a hospice nurse I think more people should consider DNR for themselves (because of poor outcomes) but to try to take that decision away from a patient is crazy work.

It’s gotten to the point that this is on the consumer. You can not just keep paying these people and complaining about it. Billionaire CEOs were on camera marveling at how people won’t stop paying higher prices years ago and here we still are. It’s disgusting. Stop paying.
