Franklin did commercialize alot and could have been one of the richest men for his time. YET, his patent on the lightening rod was defensive (he gave it away only patented to ensure no one else would keep everyone from using it. This was key for enlisting support from France for our war for independence from England. And thank god seeing where the UK is now!
