My favorite plot hook in every campaign is making one city only deal in electrum and they don’t offer conversion of existing gold. Fun to throw in for a level 10ish party that makes them feel like they’re starting fresh again doing small tasks to earn ends meat

I’ve actually used electrum once. The plot of the campaign was that the players were taken in as slaves to the government because they were criminals, but in order to make it so it wasn’t actually slavery legally, the government gave them a wage. In electrum. Which was, an explicitly useless currency outside of a few select government shops

I used electrum, I decided, that in my world the raw arcane power used in enchanting could be condensed into a liquid and infused into gold, which then becomes electrum. these coins were developed specifically to aid in enchanting larger projects, and are often used as a form of debt payment. civilians who haven't studied don't have much arcane energy to draw out, but all living things have some!

Reversed Perspective :
It's a legal currency no one cares about so its hooded when gotten as a backup fund that people hide to avoid taxes, or just collected to be melted down and used for tools, armor and weapons. Because let's face it we see more electrum equipment than the coins

I once used electrum as the currency used for Magical Items, so the government could “regulate them”, because you could only get it on their official coin exchange sites, and that way the know who’s using it. The black market sold counterfeit or stolen electrum

as a dm world builder i use electrum in two very specific places the first is as an ancient treasure from a bygone era, where gold was combined with silver to spread the value further, modern banks will by it to pull the gold and silver to remint it into modern coins, the other is in fire dragon lairs, where their natural heat has melted gold and it has then re hardened onto to nearby silver coins.

I use it, but I make it 10x gold and platinum 100x gold in my high level campaigns. I use 3 sizes of bars for gold, electrum, and platinum that are used by merchants, guilds, and governments. They are valued at 100x,500x,and 1000x the value of a single coin.
