@makeupfresh: Perhaps we should treat kids kindly regardless of if they’re carrying a blue jack-o-lantern or blue trick or treat bag. Autistic kids, neurodivergent kids, and disabled kids should be able to exist in the world without always having to be othered. If you’re a parent of an autistic child and you want to do the blue jack-o-lantern, I have no qualms with you. I get it. But if you’re a person handing out candy and you get angry because a kid doesn’t say the magic words, you’re weird. Period. #autism #autismacceptance #actuallyautistic #autismoftiktok #momtok
How can people be mean or get annoyed by a 10 second interaction. Just give them the candy, whether they say something or not

I’m kind, and I let the parents correct/prompt for: please, thank you, trick or treat, happy Halloween, etc. I am simply the candy disperser 💯

My daughter is 2.5 and is nonverbal. This made me realize I hate going out now because I’m tired of explaining to strangers “sorry, she won’t wave back” or “sorry, she won’t say hi”.

I ask every single trick-or-treater if they have food allergies or prefer a non-food treat. Every one 😅 depending on the weather we get anywhere between 200-400+ kiddos.

I totally agree! However, with 2 nonverbal kiddos of my own we use cheap recording buttons for trick or treat. One for trick or treat, one for thank you. Fast and easy. They do have AAC devices but it’s just too slow with kids waiting. Just an idea 🥰

idc if the kid is shy bc they don't want to say anything. if you're dressed up at my door I'm giving you candy. idk if you say trick or treat.

I have the teal pumpkin so they know I have treats that are just fun fidget toys just in case they have food allergies. I didn't know about the other stuff and my son and I are autistic lol

I miss the old trick or treating. We used pillow cases, buckets of all colors and it was fine.

We aren’t ever home during trick or treat because we are out with our kids. But we leave a bowl full of candy and then we have a real bucket that has all kinds of goodies that are non food and on candy. So everyone gets something 🥰 but if I was home I’d be sure to treat ALL kiddos even those not dressed up well.

Most kids under like 3 don’t always say trick or treat and no one bats an eye why treat any other kid differently. Also my kid has allergies and we just sort his candy accordingly.

My parents at the end of the driveway were the ones to wave and say thank you as we were running to the next house

It’s so weird to me to demand they say something. I know why they’re here. Take a handful, happy Halloween! I want every kid to have a good time and make memories.

Yall get pails? we used pillow cases lmao. I don't get this concept either. also not everyone is online to know the special new rules. like you said just treat everyone nice and kindly and keep it going. it's Halloween.

When I enter into the social contract that is to hand out candy to kids on Halloween I have zero expectations from them. I mean maybe not to destroy my decorations but aside from that we good. I don’t care if you say thank you or please or make eye contact. Choosing to engage in trick or treating and Halloween is completely optional on my end and I just want to make some kids happy.

Can we just be honest for a moment and admit that these “rules” are arbitrary, made up by social media and most people aren’t even aware of them so if someone is “rude” it’s not some personal attack on your kid.

I have a non verbal kid and she uses aac sometimes, but how annoying at every house, right? (for her, not for the listeners. to have to go through all that. she doesn't have the patience)
so I cut out a pumpkin from paper, wrote trick or treat on it, and tied it to her bucket. she could walk up and hold up her bucket.
I always hard stare people down when she walks up. I dare them to say something.

I think it's so sweet when kids say "trick or treat" and "thank you' and want to talk about their costumes and candy. but I would never say anything to kids that are not saying those things. that's a little odd, no?
