You Don’t Need a Tech Degree — You Need Curiosity. Today, getting into tech has nothing to do with what degree you’re studying. Absolutely nothing. I joined university in 2015 to study Procurement & Logistics — not Computer Science, not IT, not Cybersecurity. I fell into the “devolution” trap of being told procurement officers earn 150K and walk around with big titles. But life had other plans. I remember stepping into Dedan Kimathi University — an engineering and tech-heavy institution — and suddenly my world expanded. I met mechanical engineers, computer science guys, and people who lived and breathed technology. One day, I found a friend building a website. I asked, “Una code nini hapo?” That small question changed my entire life. Another friend was designing posters using Adobe Photoshop. Someone else was animating in After Effects. I was shocked — and inspired. So here’s what I did: After my procurement classes, instead of roaming around campus, I went to YouTube. I started learning Photoshop, Illustrator, basic coding from w3schools.com, and basic web design. All self-taught. All online. All free. Most of what I know today — design, branding, video editing, websites — I learned outside class. Not from a degree. Not from a lecturer. Just curiosity + Google + consistency. That’s why I tell students today: It doesn’t matter if you’re studying Pharmacy, Animal Husbandry, Nursing, Education, or even Catering. Tech is not reserved for computer science students. That mindset is what keeps people small. In 2025, tech is the easiest field to enter — not because it’s simple, but because the information is free and everywhere. Go to YouTube. Go to FreeCodeCamp. Learn Canva. Learn basic coding. Learn how websites work. Learn AI tools. Learn how digital platforms run the world. Tech is NOT hard. What’s hard is your mindset — the one telling you you’re “not a tech person.” I studied Procurement. But that didn’t stop me.
