The inspired wisdom of Solomon, recorded in Proverbs 16:9, speaks directly to this reality: “The heart of man plans his way.” That’s us. That is our ingenuity, our intellect, and our GOD-given freedom to choose. But the verse doesn't stop there. It places a monumental

It places a monumental "but" in the middle: “but the LORD establishes his steps.” This verse introduces what appears to be a great tension: If GOD establishes my steps, does my planning even matter? Am I just a puppet on a string? Does His sovereignty destroy my freedom? The answer, as we will see, is a resounding no. Our free will is not compromised; it is contextualized and perfected within His will. The Reality of Human Agency (Our Plans) The first half of the verse is a powerful affirmation of human dignity. "The heart of man plans his way." This is not a condemnation of planning; it is a description of reality. GOD has endowed us with rationality, foresight, and the ability to make meaningful choices. We are commanded to plan: Jesus told us to count the cost before building a tower (Luke 14:28). Wisdom literature, like Proverbs, is fundamentally about planning for a future of righteousness and success. Diligence, saving, and preparing are marks of a godly life. We are held responsible for our plans: Our choices are real, and they have real consequences. If we plan foolishly, we suffer the natural outcome of that foolishness (Proverbs 6:9-11). Our free will, our capacity to choose and execute plans, is the very basis for our moral accountability before GOD. Therefore, when you sit down, pray, think, and outline your life, you are acting exactly as GOD intended. You are utilizing your free will to offer Him your best effort. The Supremacy of Divine Sovereignty (His Establishment) Now we turn to the second half: “but the LORD establishes his steps.” The word "establishes" (Hebrew: kun) means to confirm, to direct, to prepare, or to make firm. It suggests a foundational, immovable authority. GOD’s establishment works in three key ways: He Confirms: When our plans align with His character and purpose, He confirms them, making them successful far beyond our ability (Psalm 37:23). He Redirects: Sometimes, our plans are sincere, but flawed or short-sighted. GOD, in His infinite wisdom and love, often subtly redirects our path. A closed door here, an unexpected meeting there, a failure that becomes a breakthrough later - these are the ways He establishes steps that we would never have chosen ourselves. He Vetoes: On rare occasions, when our plans would lead us to genuine spiritual harm, GOD will exercise His ultimate authority to protect us. (Think of Paul being prevented from going into Bithynia in Acts 16). This is not a GOD who is constantly overriding our system; this is a God who is guiding the entire system. The Harmony: Free Will is Not Compromised The great truth of Proverbs 16:9 is that GOD’s sovereignty and our free will are not a zero-sum game. GOD is not waiting for us to make a plan just so He can smack it down and enforce His own. Our free will is not compromised; it is the arena in which GOD's will is revealed. The Ship Analogy: Consider a captain who charts a course (our plan) across the ocean. The captain freely chooses the destination and the route. But once the journey begins, the ship is subject to the deep currents, the prevailing winds, and the direction of the tide (GOD's establishment). The captain ...
