What Really Happened To 40 Acres & A Mule? For those of you who don’t know, after slavery ended, Blacks were promised 40 acres and a mule for each family to rebuild. Special Field Order No. 15 (January 16, 1865) assigned confiscated Confederate land to freed families, with a maximum of 40 acres each. 18,000 families received land but then it was taken away. This is part of the basis for reparations. Not only did our ancestors build this nation with free labor and some even lost their lives, but we were promised land to rebuild. That promise was not kept. If we had that land today it would be worth billions of dollars, and, more importantly than money, it would have given us the opportunity to build our own communities, almost like a nation within a nation. The past sins can never, I mean can never, be undone, but reparations can be a start in healing some of those wounds. Although the scars will always show no matter what. Many theorize that Abraham Lincoln was taken out to prevent the 40 acres and a mule scenario, fearing that this would destabilize the country and allow Blacks to rebuild, and that we would then seek revenge for the crimes committed against us. I doubt that would have happened. Contrary to what you see in urban rap culture, we are a forgiving people. We don’t need to hurt or hate the next man to be happy; we just needed our space to grow. Unfortunately, we still never got that, systematic racism, redlining, bombing of successful Black towns, lynchings, outright murder, biological warfare, abortions, drugs, the war on drugs, gangster rap, and other issues that plagued our people, all set in place by the unseen hand. But the power is still in us, to take what that hand gives us. That’s where we hold some responsibility because it takes two to tango! #americanhistory #blackhistory #lincoln #40acresandamule #foryoupage
