A costume choice from a small regional college show years ago is a cringe memory, but hearing someone in charge of costumes justify hiding performers’ bodies because they “would look horrible” is harmful and unacceptable. Costume design isn’t neutral — it shapes how performers move, act, and feel onstage. I’m heartbroken for any actor who’s been made to feel like their body doesn’t belong under the lights. That kind of message can do real, lasting damage to a young performer’s confidence and career. If you’re a BFA applicant or joining a program soon: please vet who runs costumes and how they speak about performers. If you’re running a department or company: remember your choices affect people’s safety and sense of belonging. I’m not here to shame individuals — I want accountability and change. Let’s talk about how we can do better in costume rooms and rehearsal halls.
