Elective inductions pt 2 - risks and benefits! Also should have mentioned a few other things in the video but pregnancy brain 😅: - Other risks of induction include potentially longer latent phase of labor, more interventions, longer hospital stay, the chance that induction might not work, and other complications like excess bleeding and infection. - If your labor doesn’t progress after attempting induction, and you and your baby would be safe to go home, you could go home and await spontaneous labor or come back to try induction again later. If labor doesn’t progress or if you and your baby aren’t doing well, a cesarean delivery may be recommended. - Important to also that lower rates of cesarean delivery and gestational hypertension/preeclampsia in the elective induction group are the outcomes which happened to reach statistical significance but there were other outcomes studied which showed no difference between groups. - We often see ARRIVE trial data extrapolated to individuals who do not meet the trial criteria. - None of this means “everyone should be induced at 39 weeks.” It’s just an option you can discuss with your doctor! Ultimately it comes down to shared decision making and the hospital’s ability to accommodate elective inductions. Stay tuned, I’ll go over the specific induction methods in part 3 🥰
