I’m not in academia, but I’m skeptical that the PhD program cuts are due to the Fed cuts. The Fed funding that’s been cut shouldn’t be supporting those programs, as written. Instead, the universities are CHOOSING their own higher fixed costs and admin personnel over the incremental student costs.

One aspect I wish the US public understood, the entire biomedical and pharmaceutical industry is dependent on academia producing PhDs. The companies CAN’T do it, without this stream of PhDs coming from academia there is no biotech or pharmaceutical industry in the US.

My former student had to leave her PhD program when they lost their grants and cut from 12 to 4 students. She was studying medical-biological-pharmaceutical after receiving her BS in neuroscience from Johns Hopkins.

Even though I’m blessed to do academic research, I’m disheartened that I’m not able to advance my career. Instead of trying to getting to PHD programs, I might have to pivot into a market that is more sustainable :(

I used to work in an academic lab and my boss told me my job is incredibly secure with funding and stuff, but now this year most people at that lab have had to leave…. Its so sad :/

I was affect way back in Trump's 1st term when he pushed something called UCI (unclassified controlled information) weird term iirc, it basically forbids international students like me to access some of the computing infra which significantly delayed my graduation. 😅
