People who say the ending is bad or that it should have ended when L died don't understand the anime. The anime shows how power corrupts even the person with the most just cause. The anime shows how Light goes from wanting to be a vigilante because he has the power to be one to wanting to be an all-powerful god. Light goes from fighting the police because they want to stop him from his main goal (serving justice) to becoming obsessed with wiping out his enemies and making it his greatest mission. L's death shouldn't have been the end, because it's from that point on that Light begins to lose his mind and become obsessed with his power, and he begins to go crazy. L's death is the point that divides the anime between the "good" Light and the "bad" Light. The ending of the anime is exactly what it should have been. Light ends up losing because he believes himself to be a god capable of controlling everyone at will and assuming that everything will turn out the way he wants just because of that power. L had to die, and Light had to loose.
