I played Bassanio a few years ago and leaned way into the (slightly evil) bisexuality of it all. He has a line in the courtroom scene about how much he loves his wife but how he would “lose all, sacrifice all to deliver you” which???

That is a great take! It makes sense that a play for the common people would have characters and plot lines that are mirrors to society. There were sodomy laws and you have laws when enough rich men think something's bad.
