I wonder if one of the grounds is somehow touching a positive wire somewhere and charging the entire engine somehow. or a ground is swapped for a positive? I feel like it's gotta be one of the 2

if the end of your test lead was hooked to the negative of the battery you need to fix your negative ground cable problem if it was hooked to the positive you're wasting our time

You obviously have your ground clip clipped to a hot wire for some reason and of course it’ll work when you probe the ground
