Hail Satan 🤘👹 These impressively pink fat bottomed bulbous boletes are #SatansBolete #Rubroboletuseastwoodiae, similar but distinct from their European counterparts. I don’t care if you agree with me or not, but Satan’s Bolete is a general name for the genus Rubroboletus (deal with it Debbie). This species tends to fruit in fall-winter in association with oaks here on the west coast. They impressive large chunky mushrooms with a pinkish cap, red to orange pores, reticulation on the stipe, and will stain blue when handled. The blueing reaction on the flesh is relatively slow and doesn’t get super dark compared to other blue staining boletes. The purpose of me cutting up this mushroom is as a demonstration of the texture, staining reaction, and to give details on the morphology. . Despite their alluring and potentially delectable appearance, Rubroboletus are toxic! They contain a heat stable peptide called Bolesatine that can inhibit protein synthesis (similar to amatoxins) and cause blood clumping (which can be fatal). Fatalities from consuming these mushrooms are rare, but it has happened. . There are other red-pored boletes that look similar and are edible. Familiarize yourself with Suillellus and Neoboletus - pay attention to the texture of the stem, the color of the pores, and how fast the blueing reaction occurs to help differentiate them. More posts on this coming soon! . You like that, don’t you Satan 😈🫦 . . . #mushroomidentification #mycology #Rubroboletus
