Does your dog stay in the boundaries of your yard? Here is how I approach boundary training with @PetSafe Brand GPS collar. #PetSafePartner First and most important, you need a visual representation for your dog to understand where it is they can’t go. It makes it easy for your dog. In some cases, that can be the natural landscape, but in other cases it’s best to use flags or rope to identify the yard. Walk your dog around the property without letting them go to “danger zone”. The more time you spend walking your perimeter, the better. I also recommend taking your dog up to the boundary and putting them in a sit/down stay and have you walk across the invisible boundary. Come back and reward your dog with food or toys inside your desired area. Repeat until it becomes automatic that as soon as you get to the boundary, they offer the behavior of downing (like Roscoe in the video) without being told. Now we can start with a longer leash in the yard, staying 10+ feet away from our dog. As they approach the boundary, use a warning word. Some people use the word Careful, Wait, No, etc just be consistent. If they continue to head towards the danger zone, offer a leash pop to stop their momentum. Once they turn back to you, engage and reward! This will start to simulate the exact response from the collar. Once your dog understands these steps, it’s time to do the work with the collar. (It should be noted, that with any training collar, it is important to get them comfortable wearing the collar in non training situations as well!) Never put the collar on for training without the leash until your dog shows an understanding of what to do if corrected. The leash helps tell your dog which direction they should go, and always help guide your dog if they look confused. Remember, coming into the yard is always a success, even if it was after a warning, vibrate, or stimulation from the collar, so be sure to reward and praise your dog! Link in bio!
