On this day, @The Temptations released their Grammy award winning hit song
On this day, @The Temptations released their Grammy award winning hit song "Cloud Nine" 57 years ago - Swipe left to read the story ⬅️ In mid-1968, The Temptations fired their lead singer David Ruffin and replaced him with a young Dennis Edwards. He brought the group a whole new sound with his gritty, raspy, gospel-like tenor vocals that were a bit different from Ruffin's sound. With that, the Tempts were just in time for a change. Otis was hanging with his good friend Kenny Gamble one day and overheard this new sound playing on the radio. It would be an up and coming Sly & The Family Stone with their hit song "Dance To The Music." This would inspire Otis, and he immediately told their producer Norman Whitfield about them and that the group should do something similar to that sound. Times were changing, and the group needed to update their sound. At first, Norman brushed it off and just said it was nothing but "passing fancy." A few weeks later, the Tempts came back to Detroit, and Norman had already recorded the track to their next single that would be titled "Cloud Nine." The Temptations next single,"Cloud Nine, " was released on October 25, 1968, co-written and produced by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong. It was the first to feature Dennis Edwards as their new lead. The song was a more funkier, soulful, and psychedelic sound than their last hit being a love ballad with "Please Return Your Love To Me." It would later become another smash hit, reaching No. 2 on the R&B chart and No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. In March 1969, it won The Temptations and Motown's first Grammy award for "Best Rhythm & Blues Group Performance, Vocal or Instrumental." It was the beginning of their most revolutionary era yet to date. Temptations Forever. #CloudNine #TheTemptations #Temptations #TheTemptationsLegacy #TemptationsForever
