I really appreciate you bringing awareness to student privacy! I was wondering — would you archive or remove the older videos that show students voices too? It could really help model that change for others.

Especially since some of us are performance-based classes…kids won’t feel comfortable or free to make mistakes or not themselves out there.

What’s your opinion on recording for the sake of personal teaching reflection? Never posted, never shared, just to watch back later and see what went well, what didn’t, etc?

When I was in my teaching program in college, they made it absolutely clear to never post with, about, or around students. Definitely a boundary not to cross

I find it extremely concerning how many people record in class and while students are speaking and then post it online. It’s such a huge violation of privacy and hurts my heart to watch the people who are supposed to protect children actually endanger them.

Completely agree, I never showed student faces but would film me in class with their reactions, and have since gone and deleted all of those videos as well for these very reasons. 💯💯💯

You are so right with all of this. I want to add that my school encourages teachers to create school accounts and post to them. I still refuse to even make one of those. Years ago my personal twitter was hacked and some very inappropriate things were being posted and all I could think of was "what if this was my school twitter account?!". If my admin wants pictures/videos then they can come visit me and take/post them.

There’s a livestream that shows up for me quite consistently of a band director teaching his beginners. Don’t understand how you can do that

I’m always shocked seeing this - here (UK) it would be a breach of the teaching standards / GDPR laws.

Yes - this is on point. I have conversations with our pre-service & grad music learning & teaching students about this - we think through these issues through multiple lenses I.e the concept of permission & how minors can give assent but not consent, issues of ethics particularly when teachers are monetizing their content, ways that you can share w parents & guardians through appropriate channels etc , how sharing can alter the learning environment, and we have conversations about their own perspectives of sharing what we do in our class & their expectations of privacy etc
AND I think we could use much more
Collegial critical reflection & dialogue in social media spaces like this. Along w "know better do better" there's also the idea of "just because you can do something doesn't mean you should do it" & that applies to many of the ideas shared in these spaces but there's a general lack of critical dialogue that I find interesting

I was involuntarily transferred because I DON’T post. I worked as a high school choral director for 10 years and was switched with the elementary teacher who posted kids nonstop. She has no choral experience whatsoever. The superintendent just wanted more social media presence and doesn’t care about students privacy.

Totally agree!! I also don’t ever want to focus more on creating a video for social media than I am being present with my students. I wouldn’t want my own child posted on someone else social media…no way I would do that with someone else’s baby! 🤍 thanks for posting this!
