China owes everything to Mao. He closed China to the west. Banned imports and exports forcing China to be self sufficient which essentially created factories for everything. Then China got incredibly lucky. American unions had brought western factories to an ultra low productivity. Reagan opened free trade with China and shifted technology to their factories for everything.

China only copied the economic system but refuses to copy the institutional system. china is still run based on autocracy, on personalistic control. it lacks the kind of institutions that Singapore has.

Saying US is better off coz their per capita gdp is higher is not right. China $13k per capita could afford similar quality of life as in US $83k. Plus the gap in rich vs poor masks the reality even further. Think about it.
