@kellysites: Replying to @anagogxeu21 you always need to have access to emergency funds when going abroad. #hurricanemelissa #hurricane #hurricaneseason #ethicaltourism #jamaica
Like do I WANT to drop 5k to get myself out of a life threatening situation? No. But I can. That’s the difference.

Travelling in the gulf during peak hurricane season without travel insurance in the first place is wild. Especially with how intense hurricanes are now.

It sucks but unless it’s an emergency, travel is a luxury. You need to have a cushion to get home. I learned this too when I thought I could travel the world as a college kid

This is gonna go over so many people’s heads, but you are absolutely correct. I, too, have learned the hard way and I was stuck somewhere that I wouldn’t have been had I had a contingency plan. Never again. I will never walked into a room, go on a trip-anything, without having a solid way out of it. We live in a YOLO/live your best life society with zero critical thinking skills.

Floridian here. Late October is not peak hurricane season. Melissa was a slow moving storm, which is hard to forecast. Hurricanes are always easy to plan in hindsight. It is not reasonable to set aside 2x your trip’s budget in cash in case of natural disaster

Yes!!! We had a situation where our accommodations fell through and we were traveling when I was pregnant & we had our toddler. We last minute got a very nice hotel and we didn’t care the cost. Our safety was our priority and we figured it out later

Travel insurance is the most important thing you can purchase. It’s about 200.00 per person and sooooo worth it!

Travel insurance only costs like $10-$20 a person if you don’t have a cc that offers it too

If we don’t blink at spending $xx,000 to make memories with our family we need to understand we could spend substantially more to keep them safe in case of these things.

Unpopular opinion but I agree. I saw the couple saying they wouldn’t pay the $2k flight per person and I kept thinking, I wouldn’t risk leaving my kids parentless over $4k. I don’t know if they have kids or their situation but I just wouldn’t do it. They didn’t have to go, knowing the storm was coming. 🤷🏻♀

I was in the Bahamas last year and there was a random wildfire near the airport, so our flight was cancelled and we were put on one the next day. Had to drop another grand to go back to the resort where we had been staying to stay another night. Sometimes you literally can’t see the emergencies coming, but I didn’t bat an eye when they cancelled our flight because I was prepared.

This is an extremely out of touch argument. Arguing that 80% of Americans should ever take a vacation unless they have a large savings isn’t a great argument. If you want to look up the numbers only 14% of Americans have $10k or more in savings.
