When your neck gets irritated or injured, your nervous system locks it down for protection, making those muscles feel tight and guarded. That’s why simple stretches often don’t work. You have to calm the system, not just the muscle. 👉 Trick #1: Autonomic inhibition Resist your head going back and to the side for about 10 seconds, then gently stretch forward and to the opposite side. Do this on both sides. This pre-fatigues the muscles your body’s using to guard, helping you get a deeper, safer stretch. 👉 Trick #2: Reciprocal inhibition Look down and forward, then press your forehead lightly into your hand—just enough to feel your neck muscles work. As the front of your neck contracts, the back automatically releases. That’s your nervous system doing the work for you. This helps to reset how your brain and body communicate. Once the nervous system feels safe, your muscles finally relax, and your dizziness can start to ease.
