AUTONOMY + what is it + why you need it honestly, i have never struggled on my own. from the ages of 18-28, i practically moved through the world all alone i left home at 18 to college and then went on to live in 4 other countries and traveled to countless others all on my own in the midst of my world tour, i embarked on a few different relationships that truly taught me about this word autonomy - how i functioned mostly as an autonomous person and why it’s important it also taught me that communication played a huge role in implementing my autonomy in a healthy way when you’re in a relationship, dealing with a lot of factors, like distance, time zone changes and massive amounts of time a part, communication is instrumental in the success of a relationship most all of my relationships failed during those time because *i thought* my partners were *needy* & i wasn’t but in retrospect, i was simply leaning into my autonomy & expecting them to do the same and when they didn’t, i got annoyed & frustrated & wanted to go off and “do my own thing” * oh, young lo* the lesson to take away from this was that i had implemented my autonomy WITHOUT communicating clearly to my partner what that looked like for me & let me cut myself some slack. conversations were had, boundaries were set and some of partners in fact were needing me to be something for them that simply could not moral of the story: autonomy plays a huge role in the vitality of any relationship signs you struggle to establish your own autonomy will look like: + insecurity in your opinions + difficulty making your own decisions + afraid to be alone - codependency + constantly asking for reassurance + feeling anxious or overwhelmed in decision making so you may be like, “dam, lo why you reading me like that”. but i really wanted to share this is in the hopes to help anyone better self-govern here are a few ways to practice autonomy: 1. establish your non-negotiables 2. communicate that with others 3. make a decision & say it out loud even if other opinions are different 4. travel alone - find solitude & sit in it 5. write your own schedule with time that doesn’t include your partner/friends 🤲🏽 #fyp #foryou
