A bacteriophage, often called a phage, is a type of virus that infects and destroys bacteria. The name comes from the Greek words bacterium (bacteria) and phagein (to eat), meaning “bacteria eater.” Unlike viruses that infect humans or animals, bacteriophages can only target bacterial cells. They attach to the surface of a bacterium and inject their genetic material—either DNA or RNA—into it. Once inside, the phage takes control of the bacterial machinery and forces the cell to produce many new viruses. Eventually, the bacterial cell bursts (a process called lysis), releasing new bacteriophages that can infect other bacteria. Some bacteriophages can also enter a lysogenic cycle, where their genetic material integrates into the bacterial DNA and remains inactive for a while before becoming active again. Bacteriophages are important in science and medicine: they are used to study genetics, and they can also serve as an alternative to antibiotics for treating bacterial infections, especially when bacteria become resistant to drugs.
