My immunocompromised disabled uncle started crying when i called him when it was announced and told him to send me his likes/dislikes food list- i may not have much and struggle myself but i have enough to be able to help him however i can

Me! My son was born premature. I resigned my good paying job to take care of him. My husband unexpectedly lost his job 6 months later. We went from having everything to having nothing in a blink of an eye. I never thought we’d need social assistance. If it could happen to us it could happen to anyone

The sad part is they don’t even realize. Most people feel ashamed and will do anything everything they can to keep up appearances with friends and family. It took me to long to feel comfortable letting a cashier know I was using WIC for my daughter when buying food. We’ve had friends stop making an effort to spend time with us because we couldn’t keep up appearances of being wealthy and had to cut spending where ever we could.

I am somebody who depended on food stamps at one point, I am someone who dealt drugs, collected foodstamps, lived in subsidized housing sold food stamps for drug money. The system gets abused man. People who live it know the reality of it. Some people need it, some people abuse it and it becomes a generational support system. Im not proud of who I was, took alot to change. And I would prefer my taxes go to food than almost anything else even if it gets abused. But, it gets abused

People would look at me now and never guess I grew up with food assistance and that just 15 years ago I was less than a paycheck away from needing deep government assistance. I see every ugly voice speaking and I will remember.
