@childmindinstitute: As Dr. Lisa Damour shared on last week’s episode of the Thriving Kids Podcast, healthy coping in teenagers doesn’t always look like it does for adults. What matters is steering teens away from: • Using substances to manage distress • Using avoidance to manage anxiety • Taking distress out on others • Taking distress out on themselves Watch the full episode of the Thriving Kids Podcast on YouTube, stream it at childmind.org/podcasts, or listen wherever you get your podcasts.
My dad told me that feelings are like farts. Everyone has them, they’re totally normal, but you do need to be a little careful about where you let them out.

My 15 yr old broke his cell phone today because he was grounded from it for you and I found him on it. So I explained how that is not ok and he should respect what I said he got off the car and broke it.

Damn this would have been so helpful. Instead immature parents make it all about how hard it is for them. Teaching teens to internalize those big feelings and mask how they really feel.

And my mom constantly brags about how easy I was as a teenager because I never acted out or gave attitude and would just hang out by myself in my room. I think that is WAY less of a brag than she thinks it is.

Teach kids to feel and be okay with being uncomfortable with emotions because we can’t take another generation of adults that turn their discomfort into harm and suffering for those around them

And let’s not forget, crying…. My teen will sometimes say she just needs a good cry. She doesn’t want or need my comfort, she just wants to get it out. I’ve learned to close the door and feel my distress & discomfort away from hers.

Healthy coping in teens doesn’t look like healthy coping for adults…this has to be enlightening for parents. Especially the examples she listed.
